While the final structure of any industry - number of firms, profitability, etc. - may be determined by economic conditions, economic theory has relatively little to say about which particular firms are likely to prosper. This project examines the role of management orientation and information in the determining of individual firm success in the personal computer industry. Quite apart from its present and future economic importance, the personal computer industry is ideal for this kind of study since a wide range of firms enjoy roughly equal economic advantages, and the consistencies among them with respect to success and failure are striking.
