About the Conference

Network infrastructure competition has emerged in several advanced countries. While this development is taking place, often under bitter controversy, another generation of competition--by computer networks--is starting to gather momentum.

Large scale computer networks, in particular the sprawling Internet system, have emerged as the new cybernetworks. The dynamics of this development go beyond computer applications.

These new cybernetworks have evolved beyond simple data networks, to offer users voice, video, and multimedia applications. These new networks will compete head-to-head with existing networks and also create new service options. This project seeks to assess the impact of cybercommunications and understand what directions it may take.

Questions to be addressed at the conference include:
  • What is the emerging structure of the cybernetwork industry?
  • What type of new services will evolve? In what ways will cybernetworks compete against traditional carriers, wholesalers and resellers?
  • What will strategies be for traditional carriers as they face cybernetworks?
  • What will be the relation of cyber-operations, tele-operations, and content operations within a carrier?
  • What will be the role of government in this environment?
  • How will carriers reorganize themselves?
This is the first event in the conference series The Impact of Cybercommunications on Telecommunications . Other events in the Cybercommunications series will cover media and content, technology, pricing, interconnection, financial transactions, universal service, and employment issues in cybercommunications.
